New York Time iPad App…Oops!

Many, if not most iPad subscribers have been unable to access Times articles since Friday, when an update pushed through Apple’s App Store rendered the application unable to display content.

Four days is a lifetime in the digital world. Having a problem that long is not a good sign.

New York Times Leveraging Twitter As A Content Database

Instead of building our own system, we asked reporters to post their updates to Twitter and use hashtags to associate each update with a race.

It’s very cool that the New York Times found a way to use someone else’s platform to not only churn out updates, but also store and pull in information from their app users and readers.

Even cooler…they aren’t doing anything that you can’t do. What if your own whitelist was made up of a Twitter list you create? It wouldn’t be that hard to do the exact same thing they are doing, would it?

Yeah, About All That Stuff You Wrote

Want to hear a really weird reason why a newspaper could have trouble generating revenue online? Deleting content could possibly do that to you…

The Web sites of the two newspapers merged about a month ago, with the archives of the IHT being consumed into The NY Times. Consumed is the operative word because rather than remaining live and being readily available, the archives were erased in the move. As a result, Thomas Crampton’s journalistic career at the IHT has been wiped from existence.

You would think it goes without saying, but content is the valuable commodity here. You don’t see Wendy’s and McDonald’s throwing out perfectly good french fries do you?

Hyperlocal Web Sites Deliver News

But according to the New York Times, they deliver news without delivering news.

The Grey Lady also thinks these sites are an untapped market.

Of course, like traditional media, the hyperlocal sites have to find a way to bring in sufficient revenue to support their business. And so far, they have had only limited success selling ads. Some have shouldered the cost of fielding a sales force to reach mom-and-pop businesses that may know nothing about online advertising.

One problem is that the number of readers for each neighborhood-focused news page is inherently small. “When you slice further and further down, you get smaller and smaller audiences,” said Greg Sterling, an analyst who has followed the hyperlocal market for a decade. “Advertisers want that kind of targeting, but they also want to reach more people, so there’s a paradox.”

Still, said Peter Krasilovsky, a program director at the Kelsey Group, which studies local media, many small businesses have never advertised outside the local Yellow Pages and are an untapped online ad market whose worth his firm expects to double to $32 billion by 2013.

No One Wants The Demise Of Newspapers

And the New York Times is talking about it.

At least Denver, Seattle and Tucson still have daily papers. But now, some economists and newspaper executives say it is only a matter of time — and probably not much time at that — before some major American city is left with no prominent local newspaper at all.

“In 2009 and 2010, all the two-newspaper markets will become one-newspaper markets, and you will start to see one-newspaper markets become no-newspaper markets,” said Mike Simonton, a senior director at Fitch Ratings, who analyzes the industry.

Many critics and competitors of newspapers — including online start-ups that have been hailed as the future of journalism — say that no one should welcome their demise.

No one WANTS this to happen, especially folks like myself who happens to get paid by a deadwood organization, but it’s happening.

The New York Times Expected To Launch Local Blog Network On Monday.

…the local blog network will be filled with content from the paper’s editors (one for each site) but also rely partially on citizen journalism i.e. unpaid contributions from locals readers who will be able to post everything from short video clips to wedding announcements.

Advice From Wired To Google

Wired has some advice for Google on the newspaper industry.

While the New York Times was given an early death sentence this week by The Atlantic, Google CEO Eric Schmidt was asked by Fortune magazine what Google should do to save the ailing newspaper industry. He reiterated his previous “moral imperative” sentiment to do something, but failed to come up with any concrete solutions.

The internet behemoth thrives on curating the flow of information from media outlets, so it has a stake in the future of newspapers. But should Google necessarily intervene? Some think not.

“[The news] has changed permanently, Google is part of that change, Craigslist is part of that change, Facebook is part if that change,” said Jeff Jarvis, media blogger and author of the new book What Would Google Do. “That doesn’t mean they’re responsible for those who don’t adapt to that change. They’re not.”

The Daily Beast spotlights a new book about the front pages of the New York Times over the years.

Peter Osnos says it shows the best of the NYT and what is good about newspapers.

As an artifact for a history buff, it is worth every penny. The immediacy of next day coverage of great events is irresistible. Almost every story of our time has its forebears. On Friday, October 25, 1929, the headline was “Worst Stock Crashes Stemmed by Banks . . . Leaders Confer, Find Conditions Sound.” On the day after Joseph Stalin’s death in 1953, the off-lead was “Worst City Crisis since 1933 Is Seen in State Tax Plan.” The last page in the book is March 19, 2008, and the main headline is “Fed Trims Rates Sharply Sending the Markets up . . . Signs of Split on Policy at Central Bank.”

The relevancy of watching history as depicted by newspapers is often forgotten. I’m often reminded that my mother didn’t have a television in her childhood home until she was in high school. With that said, there is still a romance, for me at least, with ink-covered fingers reading the events of yesterday. Now, it’s the events of the moment which guide us.
