“Big Screen” Kindle Coming

Some people are calling it a lifeline for newspapers and magazines. Amazon is expected to announce it’s larger screen Kindle today designed especially for these larger publications.

Now the recession-ravaged newspaper and magazine industries are hoping for their own knight in shining digital armor, in the form of portable reading devices with big screens.

The subscription model that is eventually developed is the key. Just like the affordable and convenient iTunes store and iPods made it easy to buy new music, Amazon real challenge to find a way to distribute newspapers and magazines in a way that is affordable and convenient for readers and profitable for publishers.

I used to find it very relaxing to sit in a clover patch and seek out a 4 leaf clover. When I’d find one, I’d stick it in the L section of the dictionary on the page that had the definition for luck. Will we have to buy two Kindles in the future to press flowers?

Russ McBee reviews his newly purchased Kindle 2 at this post at his self-titled blog.

He also gives a bit of advice to his local newspaper on how they could make some money off of him.

I haven’t subscribed to a daily paper in about 15 years, and I’ve never paid for a subscription to the Knoxville News Sentinel, so I’ve kind of startled myself by taking out a Kindle subscription to the Washington Post. For $10 a month, I get the Kindle edition of the paper pushed down to my device every morning (including Sundays); it seems to contain basically everything in the print edition that I would care about. It’s missing the classifieds, comics, TV listings, crossword, and other such features, but I wouldn’t be interested in those things anyway.

This is a point I think newspaper publishers might be missing: people who subscribe to the Kindle edition probably aren’t likely to be subscribers to the dead-tree version. I think they’re likelier to be people like me, who have been reading the free edition of the paper on the Web for years now. For that reason, I suspect Kindle subscriptions would represent a new source of revenue for newspapers, rather than a shift from dead-tree subscribers to Kindle subscribers.

I’m assuming that KNS is listening to McBee. If they aren’t, they should be.Similar Posts:

Rumors Of Stephen King And Kindle Launch

CrunchGear is reporting a rumor that author Stephen King MAY be assisting the launch of a Kindle exclusive today.

Later today in NYC, Amazon is expected to unveil the K2 (we’ve known this since 1/27, but welcome to the party WSJ) and with it an exclusive Stephen King novel, says the WSJ. There isn’t a whole lot else about this supposed King deal, so we’ll have to wait until the press conference at 10AM today. I hope King shows up so I can kick him in the shins for the countless hours of sleep I lost as a child because of “It.”

It wasn’t “It” that got me as a kid. It was “The Stand.”

5 Years Left for Tangible Media?

That’s what Keith Parnell is talking about. And for the record, he thinks print has a little longer than that:

I agree the majority of media and communications are moving online. But not all and completely. Not in 5 years.

One of the interesting points brought up in this discussion is the expansion of the number of publications available online and the Amazon Kindle. I don’t have a Kindle yet because I don’t buy first generation electronics as a rule, which is a little weird for a techie-type. In this case, I’ve been tempted several times to break the rule, especially when I’m traveling.

What I’d really like is a low powered device with the “paper” look the Kindle give that’s open to the whole web, or at least Google Reader. One of the other negatives to the Kindle in my opinion is that I can’t read everything with it…yet.
