The best definition I've read came from Bob Wilson who said:

"socialmedia means consumers have been given a larger seat at the table. And they're never going back."

The trouble defining either is that it depends on what you want.

Social media simultaneously means the telling of relatively unimportant things through a medium that happens to be globally available and using a globally available medium to tell important things.

An "expert/professional" is likewise twofold. They are those that can get people to listen (no matter what is being said) and those who make what they say worthy of listening.

Social Media at its best and at its worst is a democratizing of online information. At its roots are the tools that provide the masses (with internet connections) the ability to write, publish, and distribute information inexpensively. There are hundreds of niche uses for the tools and that is where we are today...attempting to harness those niches (hopefully for the good).

There may be Social Media Strategists and Experts among us...but I would guess that there are far more people like you and me who are still exploring the possibilities of a landscape that is evolving at a rapid pace.

I'm getting a feeling that a lot of the social media "strategists" and "experts" are sitting at home hitting "Follow" on Twitter and "Add as Friend" on Facebook and MySpace all day.

The folks I know who I would consider the most successful at social media marketing are the ones who come into offering real value and insight. They're genuine, and are gems when you find them.
