Nothing’s Changed But The Changes

ChangesIf you’re a regular visitor to NewsTechZilla, you probably noticed that we’ve changed out look a little recently.

You may be wondering why. Well, did you see our old layout? Did you like it better than this one? Really? It’s ok if you didn’t care much for it–neither did we.

When Trace and I started NewsTechZilla, we had little more than a very general idea of what we wanted to do with it. We knew we wanted to do something, because we both recognized the importance of what is going on with journalism and technology enough to write about it on our personal blogs. We decided our best bet was to dive in head first,  see where it took us, and adjust the game plan as we went.

Luckily, that approach fits both our personalities as well–just do it now and fine tune later. The first three months of NTZ have taught us a lot about what people are interested in reading, what kinds of posts we are most interested in writing, and how the site is being used as a resource. We tried to take all of those factors into account in the new design.

  1. We’ve moved some things around on the front page. Trace and I are both fond of finding out what smart people are thinking and writing and giving them a shout out. Therefore, we’re giving the “From Around The Web” section of the site front and center. If you recall our former layout, it was sort of shoved in next to the “Featured Posts” section as an afterthought. Moving this section has pushed “From the Journalist Perspective” and “From the Tech Perspective” over to the right, and that’s cool with us. We’re finding that some of the best material is the stuff you guys are posting, and we like linking out to it.
  2. Single post pages reorganized. We’ve tried to make individual posts easier to navigate and read. We’ve also added “Recent Comments” in the sidebar on these pages to help foster more discussion.
  3. Hopefully, this is an all around cleaner layout and much nicer to look at. We spent a lot of time looking at different themes and choosing one that fit into what we’re doing, not to mention the time spent making a few tweaks here and there to improve readability.

Of course, there will be minor changes here and there as we go, and some of what was involved in this change are being worked into tech related articles. I’m going to get back to writing those now that we’ve gotten over this speedbump.
