The Little Icon Thingy? You Can Have One Too!

Subscribe by email:

I just realized the other day that we’ve been running for about 6 weeks now and hadn’t uploaded our favicon.ico file. That’s the file that lets you put your logo up in the title bar of the browser. See the tiny little lizard reading the tiny little newspaper?  It’s easier to do than you may think…

The first thing you need is the image file that you want to show up in the title bar. If your site has a logo, you can use that. If not, you can use a photo of yourself if you want, especially if personal branding is one of your goals. Some people even use pictures of their dog.  Heh.  🙂

Got your image? Excellent.  Now you can head over to this cool tool on Dynamic Drive. All you have to do is upload your image. Their tool will create a favicon.ico file for you to download to your computer.

Once you’ve downloaded that file, upload it to your site’s public_html directory (make sure you don’t change the name from “favicon.ico”).  You may be able to do this from your hosting account. If not, you can do it by FTP.

It’s really that easy!
